As a school project on mental health and well being we were tasked with an assignment to create/implement/support an initiative surrounding mental health. A group of 7 of us joined together and discussed our personal experiences with the teaching program at Ottawa U, as well as our experiences in our practicum. We came to the conclusion that although we were talking about mental health a lot in this final semester of our two year program, we did not find much evidence of it around us in our practicum schools, and our own learning environment. We wanted to do something to change this and through discussions with a previous teacher on DPA and its mandatory implementation in 2014, we decided to do something similar with mental health. Through collaboration we created a policy document that outlines the importance of mental health and proposed examples of how to implement it in curriculum.

Addressing the needs of every student is so important. Our education system has become quite progressive in adapting to the various learning difficulties that students may face. Often over-looked is the importance of mental health in responding to challenges. When our mind is not healthy, daily challenges become much more difficult. Having a school environment that fosters a healthy mind for all students and staff is essential to success.
Our youth spend more time in school than they do anywhere else except their own home. School is one of the best places for both educators and students to become increasingly aware of mental health, mental health problems and mental disorders.
Mental health has become an increasingly important topic in today’s society. To help end the stigma surrounding mental health, the subject should be addressed more prominently in our education system. When students are healthy mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally, they are better able to learn to the best of their abilities.

Mental health is an important aspect of overall health and well-being. As teachers, we want to find ways to help our students succeed. To do so, we need to look at the whole child and create a safe and inclusive environment for learning. By educating our students about mental health, we can help provide them with the tools they need to face everyday challenges today and in the future.
We take so much time and effort to make sure that our family and friends are physically healthy. We preach about exercise and healthy living and go to the doctors regularly for checkups to make sure everything is functioning as it should be physically, yet not much effort is put into mental health. Most importantly, our own mental health. A support system is crucial to an individuals well-being and mental health.
Students should never suffer from mental health issues alone, We’re here to help!
